A veterinary professional must be contacted for advice before carrying out any canine massage. Massage does help the body to heal naturally, but some medical conditions or health problems also require medical intervention. Symptoms such as limping, even if intermittent, could be perceived as insignificant or presumed to be a certain condition, such as arthritis, when they could be the start of something very serious that needs further investigation and ongoing medication. It is important to note that if a vet recommends medical treatment, in many cases, canine massage can be used alongside this treatment to aid recovery, so always seek vet approval before adding canine massage to a dog's treatment plan. Therefore, the owner or guardian is responsible for ensuring their animal is not in pain or suffering. If the animal is suffering, unwell or injured, the owner or guardian must seek veterinary advice as soon as possible and take all necessary steps to alleviate this. It is important to remember that veterinary professionals also have a duty of care to animals and are there to help the owner and their dog. Most will have no issue referring a patient for canine massage therapy as long as it is not contraindicated in any way. If the vet does not believe massage is the best course of treatment, they will explain the reasons for this to the owner. If the dog does attend massage therapy, communication must be maintained between the owner, the vet and the massage therapist so that everyone involved in the dog's care is kept up to date with progress, treatments and changes. We take no responsibility for any injuries caused if the owner consent to the massage without the permission of their vet.
